Sizing Up a Sketch

So you've got a great sketch that you want to turn into a full blown illustration. Great! Only one problem: the sketch is itty bitty and you envision it as an 11"x17" watercolor. We can fix that.

Tools:
- Scanner
- Adobe Photoshop

Time Commitment:
15 minutes

Step 1
Scan you drawing into Photoshop. For fastest results, pick Greyscale and 100dpi as your settings. We aren't worried about quality here.

Step 2
Flip your drawing by selecting Image Rotate Canvas Flip Canvas Horizontal. This is an excellent time to re-evaluate your sketch and make any corrections. Mirroring your drawing will make flaws more obvious.

Step 3
Create a new image that is 8.5"x11" and 300dpi. You can use Photoshop's "Letter" preset. (Note: If you can print bigger than this, go for it!)

Step 4
Copy and paste the sketch into the new image and scale it up by selecting Edit Free Transform (Ctrl-T). Make sure you lock the proportions.

Step 5
Print that bad boy out on some nice paper. I'm using 70lb cover stock (essentially thin bristol) because I want to be able to ink the drawing later.

Step 6
Slap the new sketch face down on a light box and trace over your lines. If you don't have a light box, hold it up to your computer screen.
